Pioneering Live Television Commercials:
The Ford Focus Project
Dear,
In 1999, Biscan Entertainment (along with a group of other very qualified companies) was asked to study and consult on the feasibility of producing a series of Live Television Commercials for the Ford Motor Company and the advertising agency of J. Walter Thompson.
A series of live commercials had not been produced since the 50s, when technical problems were common. The Ford Motor Company was risking the introduction of the New Ford Focus on this series of spots, and wanted to make sure they were done correctly.
After studying the ambitious plans Ford and J Walter had come up with, we decided we were more than up to the challenge. On September ninth, nineteen ninety-nine, after months of pre-production, it all came together for a live 30-second spot from the rainy streets of New York City’s Wall Street district, broadcasting on the MTV Music Awards.
The series of commercials went on for another six months. The locations varied from Studio Back Lots in Los Angeles to neighborhood streets, and aired live in both the East and West Coast Time Zones on all four major networks. There were over 150 commercials produced, and all were successful.
Our knowledge grew considerably during the series. An extensive knowledge base was formed as to what is really important when producing a live spot. How to take advantage of the live aspect involving the Internet and other interactive elements. How best to spend money, and what vendors are up to the task of this kind of unique challenge.
The experience of the team of people we worked with, and the knowledge base gained, would excite most anyone’s professional gratitude.
We look forward to answering any questions you may have, and hopefully working with you in the future.
Kindest regards,
Chris Biscan
